My Favorite Movies
Objective:
Note my favorite movies and why they impressed me.
Conclusion:
-
I am no Roger Ebert,
- but I was almost as fat as him at one time
- Here is my 2 cent movie critic review of some stnd out movies
- See below
source
-
Seen a lot of movies,
-
among the most gripping
-
The Field (intense Father/Son relationship)
-
One flew over the cuckoo's nest (appreciation for disabled)
-
and the HBO series
-
Deadwood (uncensored view of human brutality)
-
Perhaps there was something about each that resonated with me?
-
But these were stories that stand out.
-
Can't judge a book by its cover seems to be the common theme.
The stereotypical concepts of the characters contrasts with their underlying motives and methods
which prove they are quite different from what the initially appear or pretend to be.
In the Cuckoo's Nest we have inferiors
(people we used to call retards which sounds bad but we regarded them worse; Mom knew better),
the evil (Jack Nicholson portrayed the criminal pretending to be insane to evade prison),
and the righteous (the nurse who was less than healing).
This movie may also have resonated with me because Mom was a nurse
caring for developmentally disabled throughout my childhood.
I know she is a noble caring person and I admire her for that.
But I was also always a bit jealous because she was absent for so much of our life.
Mom was not the Nurse Crachet (sic?) type, quite the opposite.
The movie was jarring due to the role reversals where we saw
the good in the inferiors and the criminal
and the evil in the nurse.
Around the same timeframe this movie came out
there was widespread discussion of the inhumane conditions of institutions,
like the Rome State School aka Rome Developmental Center
that led to migrating out residents to small group homes.
Mom worked for one of those for awhile prior to her retirement.
We never spoke of her working conditions or client encounters,
but I know she had injuries and many vaccinations during her career.
And she was tired a lot from her exhausting career and family care (5 kids).
She worked afternoons and every other weekend.
Dad worked 6 days a week repairing heavy duty trucks
(Coleman Brothers, Rome and Red Star Yorkville) and also on call.
My parents were stretched to the max.
And sometimes, we kids, lived like Lord of the Flies,
survival of the fittest and engaged in semi lethal activities.
Childhood memories. The good old days.
