Fun show but my energy was gone by shows end and we had to hitchhike home
Syracuse State Fairgrounds to Rome NY
A day or so later I started my senior year of HS at Rome Free Academy

The summer ends on a less-than-peaceful note in Syracuse, New York. A so-called Great American Music Fair featuring the Jefferson Starship, Doobie Brothers, New Riders of the Purple Sage and others is marred when a crowd of five hundred attempts to storm the gate, an effort to make the fest a free show. Police and state troopers retaliate, and sixty are arrested in the melee that follows.

    • it was my first time away from home
    • My brother came to visit me
Al had just flown out from my hometown, Rome NY.
  • I worked in Houston and Lake Charles (Holly Beach) LA painting oil tanks for Chicago Bridge and Iron (CBI).
  • I worked for Jim Webster who had migrated to TX from NY several years earlier.
  • My family knew Jim's wife Fran, she was my former babysitter
  • The CBI crew I worked with was out of Chicago - Mel and a couple of other guys
  • We all went to the show in a van
  • No trouble but many LA State Police inside the concert venue

The third stadium show on the Rolling Stones 1978 US tour was the US Independence Holiday show on the fourth of July.
The Rolling Stones played to a sold-out 80,000 fans on 7-4-78, at Rich Stadium, Buffalo, New York.
This was the best stadium show of the entire tour. The Rolling Stones played with ferocity and intensity–they just amazed the audience,
despite the fact that they played very few of the crowd-pleasing stadium classics. But when the Rolling Stones refused to do an encore,
the fans became aggressive and hostile. This was the rowdiest, most dangerous crowd of the entire tour
(Mick Jagger asked the crowd to please not throw bottles at Keith as he sung "Happy"-- things were that wild)
it was the fourth of July and they were very drunk, very loud, very rowdy, and when the Rolling Stones would not return to the stage
to do an encore, they trashed the stage with garbage, beer bottles, and anything else that wasn’t nailed down.
They tore down the mouth and tongue stage and almost destroyed it.

Note: "Some Girls", the Stones best selling album was released June 9, 1978 less than a month before this show

Rode with Mike Ashline and Kristy Matt
They picked me up in Rochester.
Mike got arrested as we pulled into Orchard Park for no license, no inspection, no insurance;
he went to jail and his car was impounded.
I had several hundred dollars worth of tickets that I scalped
(Only time I ever scapled; sold at marginal markup; less than TicketMaster)
I bailed Mike out of jail day after show for $300.

  • Darkness on Edge of Town
  • album released several months prior to this show
  • seven of the first nine songs were from this new album
  • Great show, a lot of energy, you could tell Bruce was trying as hard as he could to please.
  • Bruce fell (jumped?) off stage at one point and didn't get back up for about a minute
  • probably a staged move but it added a bit more drama to the event.
