I saw AC/DC as a warm-up band I believe in '75. The headliner I was believe Angel. There was a semi-local intro band also. Well Angus went across the stage back and forth on his KNEES in his schoolboy knickers for much of the set, they were raw and bloodied by the end. Suffice to say AC/DC blew the crowd away, we were all spent. Angel came on to a fried, lackluster crowd. I do not see it in the list here. Does anyone else remember the show?

My first concert...March 30, 1969...Steppenwolf. The first of many at the WM. One memorable one...Deep Purple with Elf Nov 9, '72...Elf, with Ronnie Dio and Rock Feinstein, opened the show and blew the roof off the place. With the crowd still buzzing, a lone John Sebastian with his acoustic guitar came on next, and told the crowd how rude we were for the continued buzz after Elf. The promoter had to be nuts to put Sebastian between Elf and DP.

Did the Shangri-las (Leader of the Pack) ever play Syracuse? Three Rivers Inn maybe? I know they played in Rome.

Avatar for wwoodcuse

Among the cancelled concerts was Fleetwood Mac in the late '70's. Anybody remember the date? It was front page news in the Herald-Journal that afternoon.

Avatar for docschlac

Never mind my last post as I see the show is listed already.

Avatar for docschlac

There was a show in the late 70's with Steve Martin (he played some banjo and did his act) who had John Sebastian opening up for him. There may have been a third act but I can't recollect.

Avatar for inkdodger

Maybe include shows that were canceled? I remember Bob Marley was scheduled to play in 1980....He then became ill and later died. That would of been it for me...I wanted to see Marley so bad....Marley played at the Landmark in 1978 but I was out of town....so the 1980 show was a big deal...RIP Marley, Jah Love.

Rod Stewart- Summer 1969 or 70?
first concert, snuck out Grandma Burke

Folks,

We're still chipping away on additions and corrections to the list. We've also added a gallery of reader submissions -- ticket stubs, photos, mementos, etc.

If we haven't gotten to your show or correction yet, we will.

Anybody remember if Electric Light Orchestra played at the WM? I saw them around 75 -76 but not sure if it was in Syracuse. It could have been Utica.

Avatar for Dan in Cicero

I saw them in Utica. The debut of their "electric lights": two, very bright, green lasers.

Avatar for fondalobba

I missed the Slade show ,but my friend "tomato eyes" claims he saw it twice.Because he was doing downs and seeing double...

Avatar for manman47

Again, Slade was my first WM concert. Pretty sure it was around Oct 20 of '73. Anyone else remember this?

Avatar for goodwizard

manman47: I saw the Slade show in 1973 from the front row. The date I have for it is Sept. 23rd.

Avatar for djholihan

U2 did not play at the WM, however they put on one hell of a show @ CCC in Auburn.

U2 Setlist: April 27, 1983 at Auburn, NY

Venue: Cayuga County Community College

Opening Act(s): Robert Ellis Orrall

Main Set: Gloria, I Threw a Brick Through a Window, A Day Without Me, Seconds, Surrender, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Cry - The Electric Co. - Send In The Clowns, I Fall Down, October, Tomorrow, New Year's Day, Two Hearts Beat As One - Let's Twist Again, Twilight, Out of Control

Encore(s): 11 O'Clock Tick Tock - Drowning Man, I Will Follow, Happy Birthday, 40

Comments: Bono sings Happy Birthday in honor of soundman Joe O'Herlihy

Avatar for mystere

That U2 show was a great concert. I'd guess that there were less than 200 people there. I was only about 20 feet from the front of the stage, and there was nobody in front of me for at least 5 feet. I remember the stagehands freaking out when Bono climbed on top of the speaker stacks waving the white flag (they seemed to think he was going to fall and break his neck). Non-student tickets were only $8. A little less than they charge now. ;^p

Avatar for docschlac

I saw Robert Ellis Orrall at the Jab not too far from that date. He was outstanding, though no U2.

Avatar for ziggy11

There was an awesome Ted Nugent concert in late December (1978 or 1979) during a major snowstorm, that is not recorded. The Motor City Madman got everyone riled up and after the show, there was the biggest snowball fight ever. I remember cops getting the worst of it.

Avatar for fondalobba

Glad to be of assistance Gobblegoop, feel free to call me Lobba...

Avatar for Mark Koegel

Does anyone remember the AEROSMITH show in the late 70's in which the band did not perform due to a "near miss" plane crash that they describe in their book? The opening act was GOLDEN EARING and after a long delay the promoter finally told the crowd they would not be performing. I remember things getting a little out of hand. The band came back a couple of weeks later with "THE BOY'S FROM ILLINOIS" as the opening act

Avatar for Sean Kirst / The Post-Standard

thanks for all of this. tremendous. anyone with specific dates, ticket stubs etc. on missed shows please email me at skirst@syracuse.com, and i'll get them to steve, the online editor who has done tremendous work on this list. thanks again - i'm loving these comments and recollections. noted to a friend the other day that if you include the dome, the fairgrounds, etc., just about every major act in rock - U2, for instance - has been here, except for the beatles and the doors. not bad for a city our size.

The Byrds played at Manley Field House '71 or '72, when you get around to the city wide list someday.

Avatar for gobblegoop

Thanks Fonda, that's the Lynard Skynard concert I remember. Bad Co's 1st tour I believe was opneing for Golden Earing earlier that year.
I regret having to sell my 4th row center Deep Purple tickets because my date wanted to bring friends but didn't want to be separated. We all went to see the movie Serpico instead.

Avatar for BigSwifty

The Nov. 8th 1977 date for AC/DC is wrong. They were on tour in England until the 16th. They did open for Rush on the 18th.

Avatar for fondalobba

Fall 1974.Triple bill. Skynyrd,Bad Company(first tour I believe],Edgar Winter Group featuring Rick Derringer headlined.I can't remember the order of the first two.Edgar was sitting off to the side on stage right drinking a can of Budweiser with some other people watching Skynyrd's set.Derringer played "Rock and Roll hootchie koo" and "Uncomplicated" in the middle of Edgar's set.

Avatar for gobblegoop

Am I only that remembers Lynard Skynard in '74? They headlined a 3 group concert. I think The Strawbs had 2nd billing. I can't find my ticket stub.

Avatar for jimsome

Oh yeah, Norma Tenega also was on the bill for that show. Anyone remember her only "hit"?

Avatar for jimsome

I remember a Blood,Sweat, andTears concert in'68 or '69. Was at both Stones concerts, the Who, Simon and Garfunkel, Humble Pie and Johnny Winter, and a Dick Clark show with Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Hondells, theStandells(?) ,who sang Dirty Water, and several other acts. Saw another Dick Clark show at the Fairgrounda with The McCoys, Chad and Jeremy-show was in the Horse Arena-acts came out on a plywood "runway" and would sing on a large piece of plywood in the middle of a huge dirt floor. Either Chad orJeremy came out , looked around and said,"what a pit"! Oh, the Outsiders were the opening act- I believe their drummer lived or still lives in Camillus. Lots of memories ofgreattimes and great music! Thanks!

Avatar for Skip Lazar

In 1968, some friends & I came back to Syracuse from Albany to see a concert by Iron Butterfly with the opening act of Led Zeppelin. Awesome show.

Avatar for Dan in Cicero

The only time IB played there was in '69 with Blues Image as opening act.

Avatar for Patrick McCarthy

A lot of people never realized in the 80's you could send in a self addressed stamped envelope with payment and request tickets for a concert without waiting overnight in line. Remember driving by at midnight to see the KISS line and received front row left in the mail the next day. Also watched Queen from 3rd row using this method. RUSH, Journey and $7.50 AC/DC tickets on the Back in Black tour were purchased this way!

Avatar for exnyinva

what a nice trip down memory lane....saw some great shows there in my youth including Andy Gibb, Boston, Queen and REM...thanks for putting together this retrospective of a great venue

Avatar for frankmaloney

So many great shows, so many great years.

Springsteen was one of my favorites, and Muddy Waters opening for and blowing away Eric Clapton is one I will always remember.

But for any venue that has hosted the Grateful Dead, everyone else is pretty much playing for second place.

Avatar for jbass78

Wasn't the Judas Priest show the one w/ Scorpions and Fastway? Was Coney Hatch involved as well? Were they the same show? or was it just Priest and Coney Hatch?

Avatar for jemcoventry

I'm pretty sure I saw Mountain there in the early 70's.

Avatar for The Post-Standard

We've isolated the year, 1971, but can't pin down the date.

If you know it, drop a note to scarlic@syracuse.com.

Thanks

I could barely come up with the right decade.

I wondered if I was dreaming about seeing Billy Squire there. My first concert EVER with a total deadbeat very much older boyfriend, 82'ish? Can NOT believe my dad let me go. Joints & EVERYTHING!! All very new to me. I really feel sorry for all the kids these days that don't have these memories. The "bands" these days don't seem to have the same feel. And even so, there is no place to see them in the City, reasonably. At this point, I'm from another generation (although I don't want to admit it) I'm an old fart now......only on the outside though ;) I'm willing to give the new people their memories, but they don't seem as good as mine!!!

Avatar for duntaday

I've only lived here for 6-7 years so far but I can emphatically say that Furthur on 11-11-11 has been my best show yet at the War Memorial. Sound, Lights, Seats, People, and The National Anthem to close it out. It was a great night. I admittedly don't have much else to compare it to in that venue but I think the fact that a concert only 2 months past going off so well should bring hope for the citizens of this ailing city that we can still be a stop on major tours. OCC's new space might actually force the Memorial to rethink it's perpetual inaction over the years but I gather this city has suffered from way too much perpetual inaction for way too long. Time to start voting locally people! Yeah you! Vote for someone with a plan for real change without fear! Try something new for a change. Now I'm done.

Where's all the people who went to the WM in the 60's? The list seems to be filling in nicely for the 70's with people remembering missed show ... there must be missing show from the 60's ...and even the 50's !

Kudo's to Sean for getting this going. What a great musical history Syracuse has.

If I might be so bold Sean, this list has been such a great success, may I suggest next a"Lowes/ The Landmark" list. I saw a lot of great shows there as well.

Avatar for The Post-Standard

When the dust settles, we were actually talking about lists for Jabberwocky or the Landmark. Right now, though, the dust is still pretty thick. We're working our way through readers' submissions, corrections, photos, etc.

Avatar for jemcoventry

You should also consider adding the State Fair Coliseum - I remember seeing Ten Years After there one time, and The James Gang another time.

Avatar for docschlac

I saw many shows at the Jab. Look forward to that list.

Avatar for docschlac

And the Salt City Playhouse had a nice, though short, run, including Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Orleans, New Rriders and I think Van Morrison back in the mid 70's.

Avatar for docschlac

And REM and Romeo Void around 1982 at Drumlins, in the old bowling alley area, if you can believe that.

Avatar for docschlac

Actually, it was the Divinyls at Drumlins, not Romeo Void.

Avatar for fondalobba

And I envied the older freaks who got to go to Woodstock,Fillmore East etc.....

Avatar for S Keny

Oh, man...these remembrances from all of you are killing me. I am weeping in sorrow at the WM shows I missed due to age (too young in the '70s), parental restrictions (still lived at home in the '80s) and job movement (parents left Syracuse in the '90s). However, thanks to the influence of older cousins I listened regularly to the music of many of the hard rock bands in the WM list. Anyone who was lucky enough to see even one of these artists in action live -- whether or not you actually remember much due to the ingestion of various substances ;) -- is to be envied.

...And those ticket prices...unbelievable! I live in NYC now and can barely see an unknown new singer/songwriter without shelling out a hefty cover charge or dealing with annoying drink minimums. Please keep these memories coming...I am living vicariously through all of you!

I went to the Zappa/Mothers show 10/28/72. I was 15.My parents dropped off me and two of my buddies in front of the war memorial about an hour before the show. We walked up to the SU dorms and started knocking on doors. Two hippies answered one door, invited us in, and offered us some of the macrobiotic rice they were having for dinner. They also offered to share the marijuana they were smoking. We declined the rice but accepted the reefer. They also sold us some for the road, and said hope you enjoy the show. We sure did!! Zappa came out with a draft beer in his hand, spit it on the stage, and sneered "SYRACUSE". Two hours of great Zappa music. I told my friend "just keep rolling". The top of the draft beer i was drinking was covered with green vegetable matter. Yes we got served at 15.On the way out we ran into another friend, also 15,who was taking his 12 year old little brother to his first concert. His father who was a State Trooper dropped them off. What his father and little brother didn't know, and Im sure still don't was my friend was tripping on acid .On the drive home they had to stop the car and get out because someone had put a fake dead body in the road(complete with blood) as a halloween prank.....
